Who gets to buy a Birkin bag?
  + stars: | 2024-04-08 | by ( Joan Kennedy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +10 min
(CNN) — It’s so hard to get your hands on an Hermès Birkin bag that it should be illegal. Hermès’ ultra-exclusive positioning has meant Birkin sales have continued to overperform in the market even as most other luxury brands see demand slowing from post-pandemic highs. A scarcity-driven distribution model has helped drive desire for Birkins, as well as more broadly fuel Hermès’ business. Saroyan Humphrey/WWD/Getty ImagesThe lawsuit alleges shoppers are required to buy ancillary products (items like scarves, pillows or shoes) before being allowed to purchase a Birkin handbag. Presumably, the plaintiffs could buy a Birkin from The RealReal even if they can’t from Hermès directly.

CNN —A small stone vial discovered in southeastern Iran contained a red cosmetic that was likely used as a lip coloring nearly 4,000 years ago, according to archaeologists. More than 80% of the analyzed sample was made up of minerals that produce a deep red color — primarily hematite. The substance found in the stone vial was made from different minerals — including hematite, shown in red. Whether the vial from Iran was the earliest lipstick, “all comes down to what this new discovery was actually used for,” she said. The rest is slowly emerging from new excavations.”It’s not clear who would have worn the lipstick — or in what context.

She said, however, that more research will be needed before we can confidently call the stone tube a lip paint container.

Now, I spend more money on quality skincare items instead of a variety of makeup products. Full-coverage foundation and colorful eye shadow are no longer essentials in my routine. Shares of Estee Lauder popped more than 13% Monday after the cosmetics company delivered better-than-expected results for its fiscal second quarter. That represents a sizable miss versus the greater than 70% growth expected by analysts. About that inflection point: On the post-earnings conference call, Freda said the company is positioned to return to organic sales growth for the total company in the third quarter and organic sales growth to sequentially accelerate in the fourth quarter. The Asia/Pacific region had a 7% organic sales decline on continued weakness in Mainland China. More specifically, a decline in online sales more than offset sales growth in brick-and-mortar locations.

K-beauty is a term used to describe a skincare routine using products made in South Korea and emphasizes hydrated, glowy skin. Here are six ways my beauty routine has changed since I moved to South Korea. But in South Korea, I've noticed that people tend to do more to protect themselves from the sun. Once I lived in South Korea, I realized I shouldn't be afraid of oil cleansers. For example, I once wore black liquid liner and mascara in South Korea, and people asked why I was wearing fake lashes.

How to Apply Lipstick the Right Way

Lipstick has been used, in various forms, for millenniums, but the struggle to make its color last has, seemingly, existed for just as long. “I have clients run a really hot washcloth over their lips,” explains Daniel Martin, a makeup artist and the global director of artistry and education at the beauty brand Tatcha. Begin by tracing the very edge of your lips with the pencil then color in the outline you’ve created. Martin, on the other hand, prefers to apply liner after lipstick, to touch up the edges. Apply Lipstick — Then Apply Again“You want a color that will stain,” explains the makeup artist Gucci Westman, who is partial to the tomato and fuchsia hues in her namesake brand’s Lip Suede: Les Rouges palette ($85).

Chinese miners try livestream sales to shift coal glut
  + stars: | 2023-06-15 | by ( Andrew Hayley | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
BEIJING, June 15 (Reuters) - On China's frenetic and hugely popular retail livestreams, glamorous hosts sell goods ranging from shoes and lipsticks to baby products and, increasingly, truckloads of sulphurous coal. By comparison, domestic thermal 5,500 kcal coal was traded at about 800 yuan ($111.64) per ton as of last week, according to trading sources. Though wholesaling of hard commodities is not entirely new to China's streaming platforms, it appears to be on the rise. Three of the most active coal channels on Douyin identified by Reuters - Huaze Coal, Guohai Daily Coal Price, and Jixing Coal - have together held 164 such online events so far this quarter, up from 120 events last quarter and 107 events in the fourth quarter of 2022. The results reflect the recent trend of luxury shoppers indulging in lipsticks and fragrances even as they shun high-end purchases amid rising interest rates and product prices. Coty said a post-pandemic recovery in travel retail extended into the quarter. The company's prestige division, home to cosmetics and fragrances from the Hugo Boss, Gucci and Burberry brands, reported a jump of more than 30% in global travel retail sales across all regions. In contrast, peer Estee Lauder (EL.N) forecast weaker sales and profit last week, blaming slow recovery in travel retail, especially in Asia. Coty raised its 2023 adjusted per-share profit expectations to between 38 cents and 39 cents, from 35 cents to 36 cents earlier.
"Sticker shock" has taken a toll, the report found, with consumers more likely to walk away from a purchase because the price is too high. Further, when it comes to discretionary spending, adults are more likely to treat themselves to dinner out or premium spirits rather than cosmetics. Consumers in the U.S. are four times more likely to have said their latest splurge purchase was food and beverages over personal care, Deloitte found. "Despite the tough economy, consumers continued to enjoy premium spirits and fine cocktails," Chris Swonger, president and CEO of the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States, said in a statement. "Cocktail culture continues to thrive in the United States," Swonger said.
Beauty sales are bucking a trend of declining consumer spending in other categories. The strength in beauty is reflecting a long-held retail indicator called the "lipstick index." Consumers are spending more on beauty in general, with over a third of survey respondents saying they spent over $500 on beauty products in the past year, up from a quarter the year prior, according to Inmar Intelligence. Other beauty retail partnerships, like Sephora and Kohl's, are getting a boost from the lipstick indexUlta and Target aren't the only retailers seeing beauty products fly off the shelves. In fact, the allure of Sephora is so strong that it's helped buoy same-store sales for Kohl's and draw younger consumers.
Several businesses specializing in selling lingerie through livestreaming have had their sessions cut short after they featured a female model and their brush with internet censorship came to light in January. A man poses in a white dress and robe set posted on Chinese video-sharing platform Douyin on December 17, 2022. The emergence of male lingerie models has caused mixed views online in China, from merriment and annoyance to reluctant acceptance. Male models are not the only workaround. Even outside of China, platforms such as Facebook and Instagram have faced criticism for restricting the sharing of images involving partial nudity, especially of women.
[1/2] Gucci fragrances, owned by Coty Inc., are seen for sale in Manhattan, New York City, U.S., February 7, 2022. profit between 35 cents/shr and 36 cents/shrFeb 8 (Reuters) - Coty Inc (COTY.N) raised full-year profit forecast on Wednesday, betting on price hikes and resilient demand for its fragrances and cosmetics even as inflation pinches consumer wallets. The company's shares rose about 4% to $10.80 in premarket trading after also beating expectations for second-quarter revenue and profit. Analysts expect China's move in early December to relax its toughest COVID curbs and lift some travel restrictions to benefit luxury and beauty companies that had flagged a hit to sales in the country. The CoverGirl parent now expects 2023 adjusted profit of between 35 cents and 36 cents per share, against a prior forecast of 32 cents to 33 cents per share.
